Q. Give a brief character sketch of Gulliver?
Ans.
Gulliver was doctor of an English ship. Once his ship was caught in the stormy
sea. The waves threw him up on a strange island called Lilliput. A race of very
tiny people lived there. Gulliver tells us of his experiences on this island.
This experience shows that Gulliver was very brave, courageous, wise and kind-
hearted. Gulliver was very brave. He knew no fear. He was in a strange island,
but he was not afraid. Gulliver did not lose courage when he found himself a
prisoner. He tried to get loose. The little men shot arrows at him. These
arrows pricked him like needles. But Gulliver remained quiet. He was very wise.
He showed them that he was not their enemy. The little men stopped their
attack. So, Gulliver won them as friends. They brought food and drink for him.
Gulliver did not know the language of the Lilliputians. He put his fingers again and again to his mouth. Thus he told them that he was feeling hungry. In short we can say that Gulliver was a great adventurer. He was brave, fearless and resourceful.
Gulliver
was captured and was unable to move. His arms, legs and hair were tied down to
the ground and he felt strings all over his body. He could only look upwards
and heard strange sounds. After sometimes he felt something moving up his body.
He saw a man hardly six inches tall with bow and arrow. Forty more followed
him. He cried loud and they ran back in fear. Some even fell down However they
returned and ventured near Gulliver’s face and shouted Hekinah Degul. But he
did not understand anything. He tried to pull up the strings and was able to
break some but hundreds of them hit him with arrows which he felt as if he was
pricked with needles. He covered his face with hands to protect himself Later
on Gulliver remained quiet. He heard noise of thousands of people working and
later saw a huge stage erected, about a foot and a half from the ground. They
were four men and a man who seemed to be an officer made a speech which he did
not understand. He ordered to cut Gulliver’s some ropes so that he could see
him. He spoke something and Gulliver agreed by his gestures. Later on Gulliver
pointed that he was hungry. The Chief ordered for food. Several ladders were
put against his side and people walked towards his face with baskets full of
meat and bread. A lot of food was provided and he drank casks of wine. They
were surprised at his appetite. When they saw these wonders, the people shouted
and danced with joy on his body repeating Hekinahdegul.
